The season has started and it has been very good so far --- lots of fish in the 26-35 inch range . Fishing has been excellent along the rocky beaches both live bait and fly with some larger fish in the mix . Early Early mornings have been best with the fly rod in the mouth of the harbor and estuary --- with the proper tide there have been plenty of surface feeds . Sand eels and small herring have been the bait of choice for these early am fish ---- Deceivers and Gummy minnows have been the fly of choice for these surface feeds.
We have had a few schools of Stripers offshore chasing Herring ---- look for the gulls and birds over them as the Stripers drive the bait to the surface .
No real reports of Tuna yet ---- there have been some fish caught north of us ( giants ) near the Portland shipping lanes ----- we need the bait to move on to Jefferies Ledge for this situation to change --- but it is early yet

Still some snow on the ground here --- i will be pulling the cover off the boat  April 1. I am in the process of putting some GOPro cameras on the boat which should take some great movies and stills ----Bookings are coming in for the upcoming season  which should be a good one . I have been very busy with Shows this winter ---- give me a call or email to reserve any dates as things are starting to fill up

Sorry for the delay in writting === I have been going every day since mid June
Our Fishing remains excellent with plenty of 30 inch plus Striped Bass available along the coastline ---some days they can be picky but overall the fishing has been excellent with live mackerel --- Today Sunday we had the first reports of Bluefish at the mouth of Little Harbor with gulls terns etc --- all the Herring is finally moving out and with a strong southerly today the Bluefish are thick at the mouth of the Harbor.
My friends to the south at the Cape are reporting lots of Tuna 50-150 lbs ---they should be moving our way here soon
I have just a few days left in July and some in August available for bookings ----- as always you can call me to check for cancelations . The weather has been great with very few rough days ---Peter

Fishing has been excellent with lots of large fish along the Beaches ----plenty of Macks for live bait . Good size mixture of fish with some over 40 and lots of fish in the 28-33 inch range . It is no surprise that the fishing will continue to get better as more stripers move northward . No signs of Bluefish yet ------- Tuna are just getting here as several giants in the 500lb range have been caught ------ there are some smaller Tuna (what I am interested in !) but not enough here to target yet ----this will change in the next few weeks . Still have some dates open here in late June and early July
Regards

Stripers are here !!!!!
Fished on Sat and Sunday ------ boat was put into the water just last week ---- Caught about a dozen fish each day -most were Schoolie Bass between 13 and 18 inches with a few larger ones mixed in ---- the Fish are just getting here now and I expect the fishing to  improve as the main body of Stripers continues to move up the coast ----- we are getting excellent reports of fish south of the Piscatatqua River ------ These fish were fresh fish just arriving into the estuary . Stay tuned in will get much better as in the next two weeks as the Macks and other bait flood into our rivers .

September /October (Early Fishing )
Not sure where to start ---but we have some of the best fishing of the season in Sept and Early October ---There have been very Large Striped Bass along the beach --- averaging over 40 inches in large numbers --- it has been one of the best Months on record -- all have been caught on live Macks tight to the beach . One trip last week with good client Tom Newman pictured at the right we had several fish over 45 inches - and in the 40 lbs range -photo is attached. Tom fished with me in early Sept and had several great days ! It has been a spectacular few weeks !!!!! The water temps were still in the 60s here in early October which means we will will have a few more weeks of great fishing .

Great Fishing
This is the first break in quite awhile as I have been going everyday with charters  ---- as the winds are howling outside --- with the remains of Irene passing bye --- The past few days have some of the best fishing fishing this summer along the beach as we have had schools of fish averaging 28-38 inches right along the beaches and rocks . Had Tom out for a few days this week ---we had some off the charts fishing the past few days with live Macks most fish averaged over 30 inches with some larger ones mixed in .
There are some Bluefish around ----but not in big schools ---as we still have plenty of Macks around to catch for live Bait .
The fly fishing has started to pick up as the fish have started to school up ----there is some early am action with birds etc over fish
Still have just a few dates open coming up here the next few weeks  ---give me a call

Striped Bass Fishing has Been the best in a while !
Have been very busy guiding the past two weeks ---lots of fish both in shore and offshore ---- nice size 36-45 inches are common . There have been roving schools of large fish under birds about 1 mile off the beach feeding on Herring ---these fish have been moving daily and are in great numbers -----several trips this week have averaged several fish over 40 inches with strikes right at the boat as these big fish are on the surface pushing herring up from the depths ---- fly --live macks and ronz lures have worked very well on these schools .
Still have a few dates available in July and early August ----give me a call to check to book a trip
Tuna have been spotty ------ but expect some schools to move in any day

Striper Fishing is Red Hot !!!!
The Striped Bass Fishing has been great ---averaging over 20 fish per trip with half the fish being over 28 inches ---with several in the 36-40 inch range . Live Mackerel are the key ---their are lots of fish along the coast. We do have have some small Bluefish starting to move in with several bite offs . Fly fishing has been slow --- with some early am feeds but not consistent
Tuna are just starting to show offshore with several reports of smaller fish south of us ----- there have been several Giants taken the past few days ---
Give me a call to book a charter ---I do have some dates available still in July and August

Plenty of Herring in the Piscataqua (offshore juvies) -- about 3-4 inches long . Fish have stated to showup along the coast ----- some bluefish bite offs along the coast. So far it is shapping up to be a good season

Season Has Started ! 6-6-11
The arrival os Striped Bass has started here on the seacoast of New Hampshire ----we have many good sized fish arriving everyday since Memeorial day weekend. There is lots of bait in the Piscataqua River along with Macks ----- many of which are tinkers .
There have been some reports of Tuna offshore near Jefferies ---- chasing the first schools of Macks and Herring .
There are reports of lots of fish south of the Piscataqua --- so we should have an excellent June and early July based on the current reports.

Mid Winter 2011
Just finished up pushing the snow off the boat cover ---about 3 ft of it on the boat ----we have over 48 inches on the ground around the house. New cover for the leaning post is finished and will have to be picked up this week ----- hopefully we will get some warm weather this week to melt some of this ice . Starting to do some of the Fishing shows for the winter --- just finished the Fly shows in Marlboro and Somerset NJ ---saw many old friends ---we are all thinking of the upcoming season. Just launched a new website for the harpoon business www.shoalsharpoons.com

Stripers are here !
Each day we have more stripers pouring into our area (Pistcataqua River and Portsmouth Harbor )We are having surface feeds in the early am hours across the the whole harbor and river . The stripers are keyed in on little Herring about 1/2 inch to 2 inches long in a big way . Bigger fish are starting to set up in the deeper parts of the river ---with several fish over 40 inches being taken daily. The Mackeral have arrived offshore in big numbers
Things are happening in a big way and I anticipate the fishing to continue to get better as we progress thru the month -----still have several days open in mid and  late June ---give me a call on the cell for the latest reports and conditions
Captain Peter Whelan
4-15-10
Putting the finishing touches to the new boat the Miss Jodine (it is bad luck to change the name )---- mouting the electronics etc --redoing the livewell --etc . I will post some pictures over the next few weeks . The Whale will be on its way to Marblehead Ma at the end of the month . Already hearing reports of Herring in the runs here in New Hampshire -it looks like it will be an early start to the Striper season . Give me call to reserve the best dates 603-205-5318.
We are getting gearing up for the Tuna fish which should arrive at the end of July   --- with some new tackle etc .
11-12
The boat has been put away for the season ----- we still have some Tuna offshore as the last schools move south. I am in the process of taking delivery of a new boat (1996 model Mako 23 ft ) and repowering it with a 2010  225 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. For the 2010 season I will be fishing out of a new boat and motor --this 23 Mako has an engine bracket which will allow much more fishing room in the back of the boat and with a new 225 four stroke will be much quieter on the water. My old Mako The Whale-- a classic 1978 version will be retired ---kinda of hard to do since I have been fishing out of that boat since 1978 and have caught thousands of fish on it ----- and lots of great stories as it has fished everything from Tuna to Winter flounder in all types of conditions  and always performed above all my expectations for a boat
It will be sold this winter to some lucky angler ---hopefully continuing its fish catching history. The Mako boats built prior to 1998 were still built in the Miami factory - hand laid glass - and were some of the best center console fishing boats ever built --in terms of ride and seaworthness
I hope everyone has a great winter ---- I will be very busy preparing this new boat for the 2010 season along with attending some of the Fishing and tackle shows this winter
You can reserve on line key dates for the 2010 season ---as always give me call on the cell to check on tides etc for 2010---- 603-205-5318
8-30
The Piscataqua has been fishing very well the past few weeks ---multiple early am blitzes --the striped Bass are on small herring and have been very selective and keyed in on this bait ---lots of birds and busting fish
The fall run this year should be excellent with the volume of bait currently in the river and Great Bay
No major reports of Bluefish yet
The big news is the Tuna bite offshore ----- major schools of Tuna in the 130 -200 lb range are now up in our area ---with major surface feeds --most of the action is taking place offshore near Jefferies ledge in the deeper water and can change rather quickly as the Tuna are pushing the bait north at the current time. The past 2 weeks has seen some of the spectacular surface feeds with whales etc feeding around the Tuna pods
Throwing sluggos with Spinning gear has been the choice by most boats chasing the Tuna ------ several boats have reported multiple hookups during the day
Still have a few Sept dates open for the fall run ---give me a call at 603-205-5318
6-27 The Piscataqua and near shore areas along the New Hampshire and Maine coasts are seeing some great fishing. The continual North East to East winds have blown in lots of bait along our shorelines and with this has come the Bass in sizes from 23 to 29 inches along with some 36 inch to 45 inch fish which have been feeding very actively. Despite constant winds coupled with rain and fog we have seen some of the best early season Striped Bass fishing in years. Unlike past years where the biggest fish have been offshore ---the nearshore fishing has been great. Live Macks or pollock has been very effective. Despite the weather which will most likely break this week --- the Bass seem to like the overcast gray foggy skies. Bluefish are starting to show up ---mainly smaller fish in the 3-5 lb size. Still have some dates left in July --call 603-205-5318 or check the website
6-15   The Piscataqua River has been fishing excellent with lots of Striped Bass in the 18-26 inch range with the occasional 40 inch fish ---with early am being the best time---lots of very small herring which the Bass seemed to be very focused on in their feeding paterns --fish the shorelines and look for the gulls sitting on the shore -- mackerel have become less numerous offshore ---but we are seeing very large schools of pollock in the river the past few days which is very good news ---smaller flies have produced very well -- along with with some larger patterns fish deep for bigger fish during the blitzes
Some tuna reports offshore --but these seem to be schools moving thru and heading north
As always give me call on the cell for the latest updates 603-205-5318 --still have a couple dates available here in June and early July for Striped Bass charters both Fly and Light Tackle.
